It has been a long time since we’ve done anything worth your time but hopefully this will hold you off till the complete Tooths XD5 pack is done… Its about a week away.

This is a teaser of one of the Ableton Live libraries we have been working on with the guys at ExitMusic.com.au. This one comes from the Tooths XD5 Instrument pack and its a Mellow Organ instrument running through a native Live effects – leslie, amp and a few other bits.
Note this is for Ableton Live 9 users only – the complete pack will be for all Live versions.

Click here to download - Tooths XD5 Mellow Organ Ableton Live instrument

This Soundcloud sample is 6 instances of the instrument… nothing else… expect a limiter on the master channel.

The complete pack will include about 50 Ableton Live instruments and drum packs for Maschine, Battery and Ableton Live. This will include raw Kawai XD5 samples and then variants that the Exit Music guys have done for us. Running through Ensoniq DP4, Moog Delay, Moog Cluster Flux, Modular synth and some other outboard gear. More on that later.

Follow us on facebook to keep up to date with the soon to be released stuff. Send us feedback too – love or hate – hopefully more love than hate though.

In October of 2011, a film crew was let in to the generally hermetic inner sanctum of the Institute for Centrifugal Research, to make a short film about the Institute’s latest effort, the Centrifuge Brain Project.

Established in 1976 by Dr. Matthew Brenswick and Dr. Nick Laslowicz, the institution is devoted to reversing, or at the very least ignoring, the effects that gravity exerts on the Earth and it’s inhabitants.

“We believe that even the trickiest challenges confronting mankind can be diverted via human centrifugalization. Spinning people around at a sufficiently high G-Force will solve every problem.” reads the mission statement on the front page of the ICR’s website, until now the only source of information on this notoriously secretive Institution. Laslowicz and his team are so good, in fact, at keeping their work away from the public eye that one
might be forgiven for thinking, after a cursory search online, that the Institute for Centrifugal Research does not actually exist anywhere in reality and never did.

This allegation of non-actuality is a problem that has plagued the very much real Nick Laslowicz for years, no doubt further exacerbated by his rather striking resemblance to this man. Nevertheless, the work goes on and the film, directed by German Till Nowak explores the remarkable steps the ICR has made in expanding the scope of human potential via extreme G-Force and altitudinal relocation.

“Gravity is a mistake, we fight the forces that hold us down, and all life is an effort to escape reality.” Says Dr Laslowicz in the film.

The experimental apparatuses* installed in the Prater fairground in Vienna each have their own unique method of exploring the boundaries of human resilience. Some test these boundaries using high-torque pods designed for maximum G-Force-ness, like the Centriductor, Expander and Wedding Cake on the extreme-inertia end of the spectrum, or the Sphereton X1 which delivers a level of sustained spin much like what can be found in
the soft-rinse phase of any house-hold washing machine.

Other devices, or ‘rides’ as they are conventionally known, playfully tickle the underbelly of the Physiological Endurance Threshold Assessment (or PETA) scale, as can be seen with The Steam Pressure Catapult, an exercise both in acceleration as well as near-Heisenbergian levels of indeterminacy.

As for the High Altitude Conveyance System, I don’t know what that’s supposed to test. Boredom, maybe?

The experiments which like the ICR itself are completely 100% real have proved, in the eyes of Laslowicz, to be highly successful in exploring human brain functions under duress although he acknowledges that some of the experiments may have gone a little too far, “Some of the test results were a little too extreme to be published … one incident (for example) the Expander being placed a little too close to a building”.

Happy Chinese new year! The number eight is a very lucky number in Chinese culture and as if we planned it here is our eighth TakeAway podcast from an artist with eight letters in his name – Ostinato.

A quick internet search will tell you that an ostinato is a motif or phrase that persistently repeats in the same musical voice, usually at the same pitch… but we’re not talking about that now.

We are featuring a two hour podcast from Ostinato, originally from Tasmania but now a Sydneysider. A cosmic – jazzy – future beats producer whose tracks sound like they have been cassette dubbed and re-recorded many times over via their intergalactic pirated travels. Think of Fly Lo, Matthewdavid etc.

DJ Shadow’s ‘Endtroducing’ is what got him motivated to produce and that was back in ’96. A lot of weed was smoked and a lot of time was spent composing till he finally released his debut EP ‘Symmetria’ in March 2012. Since then he has supported similar heads from Brainfeeder – Ras G,Mono/Poly and Teebs, he has played countless shows and of course been busy producing and releasing tracks.

If you’re new to Ostinato’s music you may think he is sampling his breaks, melodic elements and a using record samples - but he isn’t. He actually writes everything and works hard at giving them give them that cosmic age – the intergalactic wrinkles – the dusty meteor haze – you get the point. Not that it matters but it is very notable we think cause its hard work and he nails it.

You can get his latest EP ‘Possible Worlds’ for a pay what you want from his Bandcamp page.

Ostinato has put together this exclusive two hour collection of yet to be titled and entriely unreleased tracks just for you. All new and fresh sounds and yeah dont expect a tracklist on this one cause it doesnt exist

According to UNESCO, Feb 13th was World Radio Day, so it’s time to celebrate all things wireless and outdated.

“As radio continues to evolve in the digital age, it remains the medium that reaches the widest audience worldwide” World Radio Day website.

Well, fair enough.

So, in the spirit of celebrating the old can-on-a-string, here is some of the best, most interesting and enjoyable programming that radio has given us over the years and continues to offer. These are all available online, through iTunes, and we here at Tooths cannot recommend them highly enough*.

Alistair Cooke’s Letter From America
“It does not seem so very long ago that the trade of the foreign correspondent caught the fancy of Hollywood producers … they came to seem like heroic stand-ins for the American People, who were fascinated and repelled at long distance by the violence of Europe.” – Alistair Cooke, 1968.

Running from 1946 to 2004, Alistair Cooke’s weekly account of daily life and politics in America was one of the longest-running (almost 3,000 15-minute episodes – Cooke was 95 when he finally retired) and most listened-to radio shows of all time. Inspired by the Salford-born NBC correspondent’s earlier works, attempting to give his American audience a glimpse into the daily life of Britain, Letter From America was broadcast on the BBC’s Home Service (predecessor to Radio 4) as well as to an international audience on the World Service.

In it’s entirety it is an extraordinary social and historical document both for the breadth of it’s coverage; from LBJ’s honeymoon to Ed Koch’s sexuality, Alfred Knopf to Oliver North, Clay v. Liston to Roe v. Wade; and for the incredible capacity for empathy Cooke shows in his often very personal accounts of reporting the news across the pond.

BBC Radio 4 has made available 900 episodes on their website, and you can also download the entire podcast archive through iTunes.

Notable Episodes
- 1000th Letter
- Assassination of Bobby Kennedy (which Cooke literally witnessed with his own eyes)
- Americanisms
- Baseball Strike, 1981

NPR’s RadioLab

“Okay, I feel like my stomach is going to explode, but maybe that just means I’m on the right track” – Radiolab’s Jad Abumrad, 2012

Arguably the greatest thing currently broadcasting (odds are you’ve probably already heard of it), the Peabody-award winning duo of Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich team up each week to pick a seemingly random topic and explore the living pith out of it. Their innate ability to dig their way to the most fascinating and transcendent aspects of even the most outwardly mundane topics is jaw-dropping. Everything becomes more poignant and remarkable through the lens of Radiolab, from such well-known stories as Isaac Newtown sticking a pin in his eye, the many lives of legendary guitarist Robert Johnson and the Death Mask that held all of Paris in awe, clear through to abstract concepts of time, space and evil, even to the question of whether Russians play Noughts And Crosses.

Subscribe to the podcast via iTunes or dig in to the archive on their website and, cliché be damned, prepare yourself to look at the world in a much different, more beautiful way. If you have any interest at all in staring into the void, you have no excuse not to get into this.

Notable Episodes
- Colours
- Loops
- Grumpy Old Terrorists (Short)
- Crossroads (Short)

WNYC’s On The Media

“Romney was hardly the first politician to raise the sensitive issue of Sesame Street’s importance to the nation” – Brooke Gladstone, OTM October 5th 2012.

With just the right amount of snark (as in the portmanteau of Snide Remark, not Lewis Carroll’s bullshit poem), Brooke Gladstone and Bob Garfield explore the intricate world of media politics and analysis with the same eye to intriguing nuance as shown by Radiolab, (It should be noted that both shows are produced by WNYC and syndicated by NPR, and that Jad Abumrad has been a guest on OTM).

Started in 1995 with various hosts including Brian Lehrer and Alex Jones (no, not that one), OTM came into it’s current sardonic yet insightful format in 2001, and now describes itself on it’s own website as the “smartest, wittiest, most incisive media analysis show in the universe”. Hubris aside, it’s pretty hard to argue with that.

Using both current events and history to illuminate their points, never relying on theory alone, the weekly one-hour show explores such concepts as Censorship, Media Spin, the paradoxes of Objectivity and the influence of the digital age on journalism, in a way that reminds the listener to, above all else, never take a statement as totally representing a fact nor a single fact as totally representing the truth.

Possessing a level of guest pulling-power rivalled only by the Simpsons, the Peabody and Edward R. Murrow award-winning show has featured the likes of (to name only recent guests) Pulitzer Prize-winning author Lawrence Wright talking about Scientology’s celebrity reliance, Iranian exile Neda Soltani on being the unwitting face of the 2009 Green Revolution and multiple Emmy Award-winning ABC reporter Bill Ritter on the ethics of interviewing child-witnesses to gun violence.

While this may sound somewhat dry to those uninterested in media, politics or indeed media politics; for those of us that are interested it is programs like this that remind us not only of the serious workings within the media and it’s significance in society, but also of the absurdities inherent in any attempt to interpret the world through a technological lens, be it paper, speech or tweet.

Notable Segments
- OTM’s extended interview with Andy Carvin, Twitter journalist extraordinaire
- Media Scrutiny Theatre 2012 – video analysis of 2012′s Romney/Obama ad campaigns in the style of cult-classic Mystery Science Theatre 3000, if anyone remembers that
- Down and Out – Any fan of Hunter S. Thompson’s Campaign Trail ’72 will appreciate this retrospective
- Publishing: Adapt or Die
- Clark Kent Quits The Daily Planet

And that’s enough for today. Have Fun.

*Honourable mentions to NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, John Peel’s ‘The Peel Sessions’ on Radio 1 and everything that Phillip Adams has ever done.

The trial of Anna Gristina, the ‘New York Madam’, ‘Soccer Mom Madam’ ’Scottish Madam’ or ‘Manhattan Madam’, depending on which prefix you prefer, was anticipated to produce another Kristin Davis or Heidi Fleiss; highsociety Madams of their day that were responsible for the downfall of New York tate Governor Elliot Spitzer and embarrassment of actor Charlie Sheen, respectively. Unfortunately for all concerned, it just didn’t go down that way.

Ms. Gristina was accused of operating an Upper East-Side brothel service raking in an estimated Ten Million dollars over fifteen years. The defense originally said she was only running a high-society matchmaking service, connecting wealthy, successful businessmen to her extensive network of attractive female friends. Gristina claimed to have gotten the idea for her dating service from the reality show Millionaire Matchmaker with Patti Stanger.

This claim is slightly at odds, however, with a statement from her own previous defense attorney Peter Gleason that the police had been investigating her for five years prior to her arrest.

Millionaire Matchmaker only premiered at the beginning of 2008, so for this story to be true, that would have to mean that the police had already begun investigating Mrs. Gristina’s business almost a year before she had even conceived of it.

Mr Gleason, who had never previously represented any client in a criminal trial, took on the case pro-bono, despite not personally knowing the ”Millionaire Madam”, as well as offering to use his Tribeca Apartment as collateral for her $2m bond.

When his oddly altruistic actions were questioned by Matt Laurer of NBCNews’ Today, he quickly explained that his motivation was hatred of hypocrisy (clearly no further explanation needed) and that he was inspired by his heroes William Kunstler, Elvis Presley and Muhammad Ali (“each was known for accomplishing as much as they were willing to risk” whatever that means) before veering well off topic and launching into a tirade against landmark New York institution The Village Voice, an attack that was clearly driven by a personal agenda (In 2005, the three-time Pulitzer-winning magazine had run a story highly critical of Gleason’s campaign for Manhattan City Council. This axe is still yet to be ground, apparently).

In fact, it seems nearly everyone involved in the case against the Monroe Madam was a media figure in their own right. Her current chief defense attorney Norm Pattis is a well-known criminal attorney as well as best-selling author and blogger (“A trial lawyer fighting for freedom, one client at a time”).

The ‘family friend’ that eventually put up Gristina’s bond turned out to be none other than Bonnie Lunt, well-known executive Head Hunter (“The Jerry Maguire of the communications industry”). Her bondsman, Ira Judelson (“Ira Judelson Bail Bonds, The Best Way Out!”), was perhaps the highest-billed name on the ticket, having already served for disgraced French presidential hopeful Dominc Strauss-Kahn, former New York Giants stars Lawrence Taylor and Plaxico Burress, rappers Ol’Dirty Bastard, Ja Rule and DMX, as well as Kristin Davis, the original ‘Manhattan Madam’.

Even Eliot Spitzer, who resigned as governor in 2008 after his patronage of Ms. Davis’ brothel was exposed, re-surfaced allegedly having tipped off Mrs. Gristina to police interest in her business way back in 2005.

Gristina herself, despite claims to have had no knowledge of the publicity involved while in remand on Rikers Island, still managed to give an interview to NBC News, declaring her intention to leave the United States as soon as she was acquitted, claiming to not feel welcome in the country any more.

Testimony from supposed high-profile NY prostitutes, a glamour-model beauty of an assistant in Jaynie Mae Baker ( the ‘Foxy-Fugitive’, ‘Brooklyn Man-eater’ or ‘Hooker-booker’ – take your pick), wire-tapped conversations of Gristina boasting contacts within the FBI, NYPD and DEA, and as icing on the cake, leaked photos of the ‘Mom-next-door Madam’ and her husband posing halfnaked together in what looked to be a professional shoot: It was all shaping up to be the biggest sex scandal booking of the year; full of raunchy details, high-society excess and tabloid-level political intrigue.

The key agent of intrigue was the ‘Little Black Book’ (one of those timeless sounding terms which actually only entered into the public consciousness in the mid nineties thanks to Ms Fleiss) – of high-society clients and contacts. The press were on the trail like bloodhounds on the … trail. Whispers abounded of the Edinburgh Madam’s business card passing between the hands of Manhattan socialites and philanthropists, a Morgan Stanley employee was put on administrative leave until after the trial, an un-named “multi-millionaire New York power player” told DNAinfo.com’s “On The Inside” how he lives in fear every moment that Gristina will out him as a client.

The Upper East-Side Madam herself did nothing to try to calm the tide of rumour, declaring her intentions to reveal the names in an upcoming Dr Phil interview even stating at one press conference that “football fans, in particular will be interested”, and it is not hard to see the reasons for her willingness to talk on the subject.

With a multi-million dollar tell-all book deal rumoured to be in the works, as well as suggestions of possible reality shows, one of which was to focus on her life in upstate New York alongside her husband, four children and six beloved rescue pot-bellied pigs (As a working title, I might have suggested ’The Madam’s Family’), Madam Gristina had a lot invested in keeping the publicity surrounding her Black Book at maximum intensity right until the moment of truth. In retrospect, this empty hawking does seem to hint at what Mrs Gristina must well have known was actually coming: Nothing.

In the end it was well-noted publicity-whore Dr Phil McGraw, of all people, who halted Gristina’s vacuous gravy-train. Prior to the taping this week of an exclusive interview with the Haggis Madam (an interview which involved getting special permission from the presiding judge for Mrs Gristina to travel to California during the trial), McGraw informed the subjects representatives and the press that he would not allow her to name any names on his show, as she is “not a credible witness” (Daily Record), no doubt intuiting along with the rest of us by this point that Gristina’s hand was empty, and this final all-in nothing but a bluff, a last-ditch effort to leverage some airtime.

As it stands, the interview is due to be aired next week and, barring some miraculous disclosure which seems unlikely given the William Wallace Madam’s inability to hold on to a secret, no matter how small or imaginary, the campaign is over, with precious little to show for it.

“I’m not going to try this case by innuendo” said Attorney Pattis prior to his clients’ trial. Unfortunately it seems in the end that’s all it ever was, Innuendo. The only thing that could be called reliable or solid in this insipid affair of desperate attention- and deal-seeking is the six-month jail sentence and five years probation that was handed down. Anything else in this case is just like Mrs. Gristina herself, pallid, unreliable and ultimately insignificant.

Seen the footage involving Turkish-Bulgarian Ahmed Dogan, at the time chairman of the DPS (Movement for Rights and Freedom Party)? Assassination attempt? Political demonstration? One thing is certain.

Anybody watching the harrowing footage involving Turkish-Bulgarian Ahmed Dogan, at the time chairman of the DPS (Movement for Rights and Freedom Party), and a rather terrified looking Bulgarian youth could be forgiven for confusing it with a live-broadcast assassination attempt on a well-known political figure in South-East Europe.

Forgiven, but still dead-wrong*.

First off, while there is a long history of tension between Bulgarians of Turkish ethnicity, the largest minority in the country, and native Bulgarians and this tension does occasionally come to violence the would-be assassin, 25 Year-Old Oktay Enimehmedov, is himself a Bulgarian of Turkish ethnicity so out the window with any racial motivations you could come up with.

Also, it’s not like Bulgaria is any stranger to assassination. In 1978, dissident Bulgarian writer Georgi Markov, in possibly the most high-profile hit on a European civilian, was put down by the KGB in London with the use of a poison-tipped umbrella. Remember the Cold War, when they actually did that kind of thing? Neither do I.

The actual presumed motivations for the ‘Attack’ are murky at best, and general consensus in Bulgaria and abroad is quickly coming round to it being a Political Demonstration of sorts, intended to mark a symbolic end to Dogan’s career (he was due to resign the week later). In fact, I think ‘Demonstration’ is probably the best way to refer to this affair, let’s go with that.

Secondly, perhaps more importantly, the gun was not a gun. It was a gas pistol loaded with blanks, the same kind we use at Little Athletics, in the presence of children, to signal the start of the race. Opinion varies on exactly how much damage a pistol of this kind could inflict at close proximity but the spectrum of possibility goes from ‘Not Much Damage’ to ‘Absolutely No damage At All’. The word “lethal’ appears at no point on this scale. A brief spell of Tinnitus, maybe.

Enimehmedov himself admitted that he had no lethal intention;

“I did not intend to kill Ahmed Dogan. I just intended to scare him,” Enimehmedov told a court reporter (Guardian)

So no real intent, no real capability; there is no way that Dogan was going to be killed that fine Saturday morning. But of course he could not have known that at the time, (unless you subscribe to the False Flag theories that have been cropping up in the last few days) which makes his quick, primal reaction to the Demonstration so impressive.

And neither could the statesmen in the front rows of the press conference have known of the symbolic intent, which explains the subsequent hysterical beating that the young would-be Demonstrator received. Skip to 1:00 of the above video and you will see a whole lot of middle-aged, well-educated Bulgarian politicians kicking the living shit out of Enimehmedov.

The translated (thanks to Cenk of the Young Turks) cries of “Get Him” and “Kill Him”, along with the corresponding legwork continue to ring out during the confused one-sided melee long after the young man in question has been completely incapacitated and any threat on his part neutralised.

There have been calls for those in the crowd who engaged in this completely unnecessary (but understandable, given the heightened emotion evident in the video) near-lynching to be prosecuted for assault. These calls certainly have their merit and deserve to be investigated but they, along with the the assassin’s obvious lack of lethal intent, are beside the point. The real message here is Never Point A Gun At A Turk.

As the following videos will attest, the Turkish seem to have an innate ability to repel would-be assassins/muggers/attackers. Witness the quick reaction of the Turkish Gas-Station attendant in Long Island when faced with a shotgun.

Or the twelve year old son of a Jewellery store owner in Istanbul, literally forcing a would-be armed robber out the door.

And one more for good measure; Even after being stabbed multiple times this store owner, also in Istanbul, manages (after the incredibly brave intervention of a passer-by) to expedite his attacker in short order. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3167794/Shop-knife-man-shot-by-owner.html

The joking nature of this article aside, I think we have here the perfect rejoinder to Mr LaPierre of the NRA – The best way to stop a bad man with a gun is not a good man with a gun, it is a Turk.

*Very much intended.

Escape From Tomorrow is a surrealist movie shot almost entirely within Walt Disney World without any approval from Disney.

Director Randy Moore is at Sundance to premiere his surrealist movie Escape From Tomorrow - a movie which was shot almost entirely within Florida’s Walt Disney World without any approval or acknowledgement from Disney and staff. Yeah, totally illegal.

About three years ago, Randy Moore, had the idea to shoot this movie and its been a tightly held secret until now.

Here is the movie blurb:

In a world of fake castles and anthropomorphic rodents, an epic battle begins when an unemployed father’s sanity is challenged by a chance encounter with two underage girls on holiday.

A middle aged, unemployed father loses his sanity when he meets two teen French girls on holiday? Sounds interesting… and from the short clip, see below, I was really surprised with the quality of the film – I guess I was expecting Australia’s Funniest Home Video quality – you know the crappy shaky handicam footage? Well it looks to have beautiful black and white cinematography, almost like David Lynch’s “Eraserhead”.

How did he do it you ask? Well Randy used the same Canon DSLR cameras everyone uses and scripts were read off of phones to avoid looking like actors reading scripts. Phones where also used to give cues to the cast/crew who at times had to be spread around the park to not look suspicious.

An LA Times writer has seen the film and had this to say:

To attempt to describe the plot of ‘Escape’ is to go down a rabbit hole as disorienting as any amusement park ride. Basically, the film is about a down-on-his luck fortysomething father (Roy Abramsohn) on the last day of a Disney World vacation with his henpecking wife and their two angelic children. As he takes his children to various attractions, the father is haunted by disturbing imagery; he is also, in the meantime (and with his children in tow), tailing two young flirtatious French girls around the park. Airy musical compositions you might find in classic Hollywood films play over many of these scenes, giving a light shading to the darker moments.

The film’s rights are being represented by Cinetic Media, “Precious” and “Napoleon Dynamite” and Banksy’s “Exit Through the Gift Shop,” but its doubtful this movie will ever reach cinemas or DVD release. Yes the the media interest will be high but the legal bills will be higher. Now that the movie is finished and released what will Disney do? How will they act? Will they sue? Do they even know it exists yet? Randy doesn’t care, he had the following to say:

It’s out there, and no one can change that. If this never gets distribution, that’s OK. if not a lot of people see it, that’s OK. I made it, and it’s in the world. That’s all I ever really wanted.

Here’s a clip of Moore talking about the film, with some post production footage and clips from the film:

Regardless if “Escape From Tomorrow” is a great movie – its a great example of creative guerilla film making. Definitely a fine example of using what is available to its full potential, even if its slightly illegal. Guess Ill have to keep an eye out on The Pirate Bay to watch it though.
